Organization
The LIR is a non-profit research organization whose legal form is that of a “gGmbH” [”gemeinnützige Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung”], a non-profit limited liability company.
The LIR's scientific program and transfer activities are currently implemented in three research areas, two research platforms and the transfer application platform.
Its partners are the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz (UM), represented by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Prof. Dr. Ralf Kiesslich and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), represented by the President, Prof. Dr. Georg Krausch.
The supervisory board consists of eight members from federal and state levels and the UM and JGU, as well as two individuals from society and public life.

The LIR is led by a board consisting of two scientific directors, Prof. Dr. Klaus Lieb and Prof. Dr. Beat Lutz, and one Administrative Director, Dr. Thorsten Mundi.

The institute’s council consists of all work group leaders, as well as a representative from both the scientific and non-scientific staff. It advises and assists the managing directors with regard to the institute’s scientific development.
The administration and the employees council support all employees of the LIR. All of the employees together form the Institute Assembly.
